fun at the range!!!

Our group rented the range for the whole day on New Years.. We had 11 people and close to 40 weapons.. I didn't save the list. Hopefully The Biss will check in and he can tell you what we had there.. There was everything from his M1 Garand , shotguns an assortment of rifles , AK47s and many , many handguns. We set up stations and went from station to station and fired each others weapons. The Biss helped me his M1 Garand. It was the most talked about weapon there..My Daughters boyfriend was beyond impressed and fired it a lot..My Daughter shot her first 22 pistol and within a few hours she was killing the tactical course with a .40.. The Biss worked with his daughter and some of the small kids and the Range Officer kept an eye on all the adults..

I did really well except with the 12 gauge shotgun shooting slugs. It kicked my butt.. After that everything else I shot was pleasant. Out of everything I shot that day I was totally smitten with the 9mm Jericho-baby eagle. My Daughter also loved it and I think Im going to buy one..

We also set up a tactical course. Everyone got a run. The Biss shot the best on the tactical. I did well except I took out the prop mailbox [got yelled at ] and also cut my nose from recoil on the .40 I was shooting. We were there 8 hours and it was blast.. The guy who arranged the whole trip is already talking about doing it again..

I also went back to the range this week. I took that damn 20 gauge shotgun and a box of slugs and made peace with it..:23_30_104: I cant say I will ever find it fun but I can handle it ok.. While I was there the nice lady next to me let me fire all her weapons. She had 4 different 22 revolvers designed for hitting the target. They were fun to shoot and I did real well but missed all the bang, bang of a heavier gun. Still it was a privilege to get to fire guns I will never be able to afford..

your hooked now!!!!

that is one of my favorite things is once or twice a year going to (or hosting) a event like that (gun sharing) really gives you a chance to test other types of guns on the cheap

ours usually become a annual themed event........where the culmination of the evening is everyone shooting at that years special thing at once blowing it up...IE a toilet stool...computer....TV....Car....Propane cylinders.... Then when over everyone has a big Pig roast kind of meal and beer...

Another really fun activity is going to a sporting clays range with a group of people i think you would fall in love with your 20ga if you would do that and shoot light shot loads its amazingly fun

Re: fun at the range!!!

It was a blast! Being able to shoot pretty much any caliber at any time was awesome. Here's my range report:
Three Words: Un Frickin Believable!

What an AWESOME day at the range. Many many many thanks go out to RCC and his son for putting this road on the show and getting the tactical course assembled on Range 1.

My daughter Anna was a little apprehensive about going to this. When we've been shooting in the past, it's been a couple of guns and everyone (including the kids) wants to shoot. Wait times are inevitable.

This one was so very different. 11 or so people and over 40 FREAKIN firearms! I mean, you could just walk up to a station, load a magazine of ammo, and start shooting! 7.62mm, .22lr, 5.56mm, .38, .308, .30-06, .30 carbine, .40, 9mm... I have NEVER had the opportunity to try so many different calibers of ammunition in so short a time.

Big guns, itty bitty guns, single action, double action, slide action, revolvers, classic WWII wood and steel, modern battle rifles... It was all there for the plinking. WOW WOW WOW... er POW POW POW I meant.

The tactical course gave us an opportunity to test our ability to shoot and scoot. I'm happy to report that I nailed all the enemy "tangos" (mostly center mass) without losing a single hostage on my run through the course. I did have one hostage that lost quite a bit of hair from the right side of his head.

While other members were running though the tac-sim on Range 1, I made Range 3 hot and gave some of our younger members the opportunity for familiarization fire with the Ruger 10-22 and Mark III pistol. Neil, I think your little girl was very pleased with the results of her target, as well she should be. That was a target to be proud of, especially with as little time behind the iron sites as she has.

6 hours had come and gone. I was worried that by lunch or so, my daughter and I would have been shot out and ready to leave. No such luck. Sadly, 16:00 came too quickly and we had to start clearing the lanes and sweeping brass so that the we could be out by 16:30. The civilians would start pouring in come 18:00.

This was, for me, one of the most excellent meet up opportunities that I have EVER attended. Good people with intelligence, a nice lunch spread, and more damn guns than you could shake a stick at! Now it's time to learn to reload all this brass we made!

Wow! Sounds like a great time.

Don't feel bad Avalon about the slugs. Heck, when I shoot slugs out of my 12 gauge Remington 870, my shoulder starts to get sore pretty quickly (and I'm no skin and bones kind of guy, 6' 185 lbs). Glad you guys had a good time! Wish I could have been there! I need to get to the range STAT.

My shoulder hurt like hell while I was shooting.. I have titanium in my shoulder from an previous injury and I can feel that recoil. I just ignored it.. I was expecting it to hurt the next morning but it didn't..I have embarrassed myself too many times where shot guns are concerned. I was determined to stop being such a wimp.. I will say I am getting comfortable with my 20 gauge but have no desire to shot a 12 gauge ever again.. :no_ma:

Yes ma'am. I have had a glimpse of the Greek evil eye, and I now submit to your wishes. I'll wait until something is worth the consequences.

HOPLOPHOBIA Definition

HOPLOPHOBIA
A modern scourge.

Hoplophobia, n. Irrational, morbid fear of guns (c. 1980, coined by Col. Jeff Cooper, from the Greek hoplites, weapon; see his book Principles of Personal Defense). May cause sweating, faintness, discomfort, rapid pulse, nausea, sleeplessness, nondescript fears, more, at mere thought of guns. Presence of working firearms may cause panic attack. Hoplophobe, hoplophobic.

Hoplophobes are common and should never be involved in setting gun policies. Point out hoplophobic behavior when noticed, it is dangerous, sufferers deserve pity, and should seek treatment. When confronted about their condition, hoplophobes typically go into denial, a common characteristic of the affliction. Sometimes helped by training, or by coaching at a range, a process known to psychiatry as "desensitization," a useful methodology in treating many phobias.

Hoplophobic behavior is often obvious from self-evident irrational responses to real-life situations, and is frequently seen in the news media and public debate. When a criminal commits a crime using a gun, hoplophobes often seek to disarm, or make lists of, innocent people who didn't do anything, an irrational suggestion.

The idea of creating an enormously expensive government-run 90-million-name database of legitimate gun owners -- which by definition would not include armed criminals -- is a prime example of an irrational hoplophobic response to the issue of crime. How the writing of your name in such a list would help stop crime is never even addressed. (See, "The Only Question About Gun Registration")

An effort is underway nationally to have hoplophobia recognized in the DSM, the official directory of mental ailments. Resistance from elements in the medical profession suggest this may be quite difficult, but that does not reduce the importance of recognizing a widespread, virulent, detrimental mental condition commonly found in the populace. The actual number of undiagnosed hoplophobes is unknown, but believed to be in the tens of millions.

Read Dr. Sarah Thompson's brilliant essay on the medical nature of this afflicition, the article that got the ball rolling on serious medical study of a condition affecting millions of Americans.

Hoplophobes are dangerous. They should not be involved in setting public policy.
Hoplophobes are victims. They are sick and need help.
Hoplophobes deserve sympathy. It's not their fault they are afflicted.
Hoplophobes should seek treatment. Help shoot for a cure.

Previous notions that GIM is unwelcoming to women has been disproved in this thread. Avalon is apparently one happy camper after all.

Re: fun at the range!!!

It IS more fun to shoot when you can "share" arms between shooters and try out what the "other guys/gals" have. :ok: One time at a local rural private range I was watching someone shoot a bolt-action 30-06 (sorry, don't remember the make). He offered to let me load and try it, under condition that I had to shoot all (five) rounds in the magazine. He was smiling when he said it - and I knew why he was smiling. I'm not that big a guy and yes, I was a bit sore the next day, but I'll not trade that experience, not even for gold. The camraderie is worth so much more than mere metal. :yippee:

(btw, 30-06 rocks.)

(and that Barrett? Talk about overkill on a target... any target! :23_30_104:)

(In the not-so-serious-but-just-as-fun department, show up with a well-made propane powered potato gun and you will have instant interest.)
